Run Training Question
Those of you that are runners (please come of lurkdom to help a girl out), I have a question.
Do you think you can train for a long distance run on the treadmill for the majority of training or do you think, to be honest to the sport and the rigors of a run, should it be done more outside in the elements?
Thanks any and all!

Tammy I have no idea, hope someone replies to your question. I run for fitness only not to do marathons/ I am able to adapt from the treadmill to running outdoors quite easily. I enjoy both...
Having a training partner while on holiday this year pushed my time faster as she was a better runner and I wanted to keep up...so see the difference now when running on treadmill due to the awful weather.
I think you can do both!
I've heard to mimick the road to put your treadmill on a slight incline (2 maybe).
You can probably get away with the majority of your training on a treadmill. Say if you are running 3x per week; I would run 2 times on the treadmill and 1 time outdoors.
Does that help any??
PS. It excites me to no end that you are running either way!
I HATE running on the treadmill but it's becoming a reality because of the weather.
I agree with Krista, I have to have a slight incline on the treadmill to do a run that feels right. I much prefer to run outside and any training I have done for runs has been outdoors. The indoor running is more for workout then any enjoyment. Like I said I'm starting to come to terms with it but really prefer to run outside.
Good luck!
I would say running on the street is far better, but like everyone else, I am stuck inside due to the freezing temperatures... so i am using the treadmill. I have noticed that I use different muscles on the treadmill then the street.... maybe try getting your long run in once a week out on the street??
:)
I know people that do 90% of their training on the treadmill and go on to run better times than me in races! I think it's a good idea to get some outdoor runs in if that is the surface you will be racing on... but especially in winter it is more difficult to do that. I find treadmill running actually harder than outdoors (probably a mental thing more than anything?) but that's just me. I think running some runs outside will still be helpful... but at the same time, no point to run outside if it's FREEZING or super icy and hazardous and then you fall and injure yourself.
I'm not a runner but I personally know people who have done it both ways and they were both successful.
I don't know NUTHIN' about RUNNIN'!
I hate it!
Now, walking is a different story. I can walk for hours, literally, and at a killer pace. I just can't run because it hurts my knees and my boobs flop all over the place...
And literally every runner I've known personally has ended up with an injury so that they can't do anything, so that's another reason I avoid it.
So...good luck in your running quest...but be careful!
